Ponda Center Hospitality
FLOYD:
Jen's Ducks-Kings rivalry post inspired me in a way that I did not expect. It made me realize that the thing that's keeping me from attending a great game at Staples featuring two exciting teams playing a sport that I love is the fact that I don't know where to park, or what is good to eat in and around their arena. Wouldn't it be nice if there were some kind of guidebook detailing how to get to, park near, eat in, and enjoy the Staples Center? Well, there isn't one, but there's no reason we can't make something like that for the Ponda Center.
I'm not saying we need to roll out the red carpet for Kings fans, but there's no reason we can't share some of the tips and tricks regarding our beloved home ice and maybe at the same time offer a little reassurance that they won't be stabbed in the parking lot (though I am going to boo the s**t out of you once the game starts). I'll add some of my thoughts first, and if any other Duck fans would care to contribute, please add yours in the comments as well.
***Ducks Sign Fowler to Entry Level Deal***
THE TELETYPE:
The Ducks announced today that they have signed their 2010 first round draft pick, Cam Fowler, to a three-year entry level deal. As of this post, no financial details have been reported. UPDATE: Per Eric Stephens' Twitter: "Fowler will make $810,000 if he's in the NHL. 3-yr entry deal includes signing bonuses of 90K for each and team's cap hit will be 900K"
The contract will allow Fowler to compete for a job with the Ducks in the 2010-11 campaign, and projected as a Top 5 pick, Fowler was likely expecting to compete for an NHL job this season. However, as the defenseman turns 19 in December of this year and the CBA equates just 10 games of NHL play with an entire year of RFA experience per section 10.2(a)(A), Fowler may only get 9 starts to prove himself.
CBA 10.2 (a) (A):
For the purposes of this Section 10.2(a), a Player aged 18 or 19 earns a year of professional experience by playing ten (10) or more NHL Games in a given NHL Season, and a Player aged 20 or older (or who turns 20 between September 16 and December 31 of the year in which he signs his first SPC) earns a year of professional experience by playing ten (10) or more Professional Games under an SPC in a given League Year.
Jen Plays Instigator
JEN:
Robby's excellent post on marketing got my little blonde head thinking about something that's consistently bothered me over the years - "The Freeway Faceoff". See what I did there, how I put quotes around the title? I did that because, for Ducks fans, that is exactly what the Ducks vs. Kings rivalry has come down to, a gimmicky name.
I'm going to do something that burns my soul to the core, and something you'll probably never witness again. I'm going to give credit to the game night entertainment crew for the Kings. As I describe later, they do what they can to take jabs at the Ducks, and fuel the hate-filled energy at Staples.
In full disclosure, I have never been to a Ducks vs. Kings game at Staples for three reasons: 1) I am far too lazy to drive up there and back, 2) I don't want to get stabbed at the game (I'm generalizing since this always seems to happen at Dodger games), and 3) the stench is really hard to get out of my clothes and hair. Instead, I am relying on my good friend and fellow Ducks' fan, Josh, who frequently attends the "rivalry" games at Staples, for insight into the Kings' take on the games against the Ducks.
***Elmira Jackals Are Ducks' New ECHL Affiliate***
THE TELETYPE:
In a press conference today at the Buffalo Wild Wings at Horseheads on Route 64, the Elmira Jackals of the announced that they are the new ECHL partner of the Syracuse Crunch and the Anaheim Ducks. According to Lindsay Kramer of the Crunch Hockey Blog, the Jackals are also working toward finalizing a deal with the Binghamton Senators and parent club Ottawa, who were the club's affiliates last season. That would make the Jackals a dual affiliate team next season.
After partnering with Syracuse, Anaheim had to cut ties with its previous ECHL team in Bakersfield in order to find a club closer to the Crunch. The Elmira Jackals certainly fit the bill, having served as the Crunch affiliate in 2007-08 and sitting a mere two hour drive from the War Memorial in Syracuse.
Editor's Note: According to the team press release, after the press conference, wings were 45-cents. Awesome.
***Perry to Participate in Sold Out Vu Pham Memorial Game***
THE TELETYPE:
Corey Perry will skate in the Vu Pham Memorial Game in Wingham, Ontario on August 12th. The charity game will feature NHL players lacing up against select members of the Ontario Provincial Police with all proceeds going to benefit Heather Pham and her three sons, the surviving family of Vu Pham, an OPP constable who was killed during a routine vehicle stop in March. Pham was extremely active in the hockey community, serving as a volunteer trainer, a coach and an executive member of Wingham Minor Hockey.
Perry's father, Geoff, is an OPP officer, and his grandfather, Cliff, served with the OPP for 33 years. Strathroy, Ontario native and former Duck Andy McDonald will also participate in the game along with NHL notables Chris Neil, Ryan and Cal O'Reilly, Nick Spaling and Justin Peters
As of yesterday, tickets to the game are sold out, but the organizing committee, headed by NHL referee Kevin Pollock, issued a press release noting the following:
Even though tickets to the game are sold out, anyone wishing to make a cash donation to the cause can send a cheque to the Western Ontario Athletic Association. Cheques payable to the "Vu Pham Memorial Celebrity Hockey Game" mailed or dropped off to P.O. Box 110, 49 Alfred St. Wingham, ON N0G 2W0.

Are You Ready To Overpay?
ARTHUR:
An interesting retweet from Eric Stephens today:
Ducks still want Bieksa but the price will be hefty, Salo's injury helped the Canucks in some ways...
NHLSourcesSay is the "insider" for the site HendricksHockey.net and the same Twitter account that posted a rumor about Selanne and the Ducks talking about a two-year deal, a rumor for which Stephens himself procured a denial from management.
The idea isn't completely illogical. With Mason Raymond now on the books, and Sami Salo, perhaps, off the books to open the season, the Canucks aren't under the gun to clear cap space. And there have been no shortage of rumored suitors for Bieksa, though Anaheim was rumored to have serious interest. So, if Bob Murray is determined to acqurie Kevin Bieksa, he will probably have to overpay for the 29 year-old and the remaining one year at 3.5M on his contract.
Anaheim Ducks Marketing Audit - Price
ROBBY:
The success of our beloved Anaheim Ducks rests on more than just the on-ice product. Their ability to draw and sustain paying fans, form a strong bond with the community, and generate interest and excitement in the team are all critical to the long-term success of the franchise. While Anaheim hasn't had the woes of some of the other southern franchises (Tampa, Florida, and Atlanta—I'm looking at you), they did experience a precipitous drop in attendance last year. According to ESPN's year-end report, Anaheim ranked 24th in the league in attendance (just between Carolina and Florida). For me, this is cause for concern.
But how can we find ways to improve what the team is doing? We first have to get an idea of where the franchise currently stands.
Anybody who's ever taken a college-level marketing class has had the Five P's drilled into their head: Price, Product, People, Promotion, and Place. So in this, what I envision to be the first of numerous posts on the subject, I wanted to take an overall look at the franchise from a price perspective to get a sense of how the team is doing.
Anaheim Clippings - 7/24/10
Since we did a Cam Fowler video last time, I thought I would point to this segment of The Element which gave a behind-the-scenes look at the Ducks' Pre-Draft Meeting. The group happened to be talking about Fowler, who the Ducks pegged at third, when Bob Murray asked quite matter-of-factly why the room pegged Fowler ahead of the others?
MADDEN: Fowler's skill and poise won out over Gubrandson's character and competitiveness.
MURRAY: We're not worried about Fowler's character at all? Nobody has question marks, right?
- Eric Stephens links his story on Matt Clark as part of his continuing coverage of Ducks' Prospects. Surprisingly, we're linked in his story, where we contradict the Ducks by listing Matt with two T's.
Rising defense prospect Mat Clark is profiled in latest Ducks A-Z. And yes, it is one 't' according to the club. http://bit.ly/aOsxG8
- Me linking my interview with Matt from last season, where he confirmed to me that he "normally" uses two T's, which is why his junior team in Brampton had him listed thusly.
T-Gate. I realize I'm 'just a blog' but I have him on tape: "Either way, but two 'T's is what I normally go with" http://tinyurl.com/3xqovex
