***Kariya Will Not Play This Season According to His Agent***
Paul Kariya's agent announces he will not play this season.
THE TELETYPE:
Per James Mirtle's Twitter, Paul Kariya's agent, Don Baizley, announced that the forward will not play the 2010-11 campaign due to post-concussion syndrome. Many teams were rumored to be interested in the left wing, most notably the Ducks, who made their interest public after Teemu Selanne announced that he had discussions with both Kariya and the team regarding the possibility.
Kariya suffered major concussions while playing for Anaheim, often on late and questionable hits, but he took another one this past season with the Blues when Buffalo's Patrick Kaleta delivered an elbow to the side of Kariya's head. Though he noted that it was his first concussion in over a decade, this announcement would seem to imply that the effects remain.
***Lupul Out Until At Least November***
THE TELETYPE:
OCR's Curtis Zupke confirmed today that Joffrey Lupul experienced a setback in his rehabilitation related to the return of the blood infection he had previously cleared following surgery on a herniated disc. According to the report, the best case scenario timetable would involve Lupul returning to physical activity in September and returning to action in November. That matches closely with what Zupke told Team 1260's Bob Stauffer last week according to a tweet by ALLDUCKS, which noted that Lupul was likely out until December.
The Ducks have made a few moves at forward this offseason, trading Mike Brown at the Draft, waiving Ryan Carter in July and acquiring Aaron Voros in the Steve Eminger trade. The team is also rumored to be interested in a few forwards, most notably Paul Kariya. However, it is unclear how Lupul's injury will affect the team's roster-building for the remainder of the offseason.
***Selanne Signs For One Year at 3.25M***
THE TELETYPE:
Teemu Selanne made an official announcement to fans via the Ducks website today, and the OC Register reports the 40 year-old is set to sign a one-year deal at 3.25M with postseason bonuses. UPDATE: The Ducks confirmed in an official announcement that Selanne is officially signed. And per Capgeek, the contract contains an additional 1.25M (total 4.5M Cap hit) in bonuses and a No Movement Clause.
This report comes on the heels of statements Selanne made in Finland that he intended to return to Anaheim and that he had discussed the possibility of former Mighty Duck teammate Paul Kariya with Kariya and the Anaheim organization.
Selanne played 54 games last season in a campaign shortened by injuries, namely a broken jaw and a broken hand sustained in unintentional shot blocks. In that time, he still managed 27 goals (with 5 game winners) on 173 shots.
Bob Murray commented on the signing here. Also offering his thoughts on Kariya. The Ducks hosted a media conference call with Selanne from his home in Finland. The Ducks are tweeting quotes via the team's twitter account. We have them for you after the jump...
***Selanne Tells Finnish Outlets He Shall Return***
THE TELETYPE:
According to a Finnish news outlet (Urheilu Lehti) that has been picked up and translated by TSN, Teemu Selanne has made the decision to return to the Anaheim Ducks. Selanne says he would like to start negotiations, perhaps signing in a few days, that the recent acquisitions by the Ducks have convinced him the team can succeed, and most interestingly that he has spoken with both Paul Kariya and the Anaheim organization about the possibility of bringing his former teammate back to the Ducks. A translation by ALLDUCKS reader ahtikullervo is available here.
Uncertainty surrounded Selanne's return this offseason after he told Finnish outlet Helsingin Sanomat that playing on a winning team would be determinative for him. More recently, speculation has grown that the return of Paul Kariya was also a factor in Selanne's decision.
***Ducks Sign Palmieri***
THE TELETYPE:
Anaheim announced today that they have signed Kyle Palmieri to a three year entry level deal. The 5'10" right winger was the second of the Ducks' two first round picks in the 2009 Draft. UPDATE: Capgeek reports the contract as 900K per season NHL, 67.5K per season AHL, 90K per season signing bonus and 175K per season in signing bonuses.
The 19 year-old completed his freshman season at Notre Dame last year, but after an off-ice incident that led to him and teammate Riley Sheahan being arrested, many speculated he might come to the pros early. At Conditioning Camp last month, Palmieri confirmed to J.P. Hoornstra that the situation was mostly resolved and sounded as if he planned to return to South Bend. However, by signing a contract with the Ducks, Palmieri is now ineligible for NCAA play.
ARTHUR:
There was some confusion about this in the comments, so let me clarify, Palmieri CAN play in the AHL this year. He is considered an NCAA player and is not bound by the agreement between the CHL and NHL.
***Ducks Sign Sutton***
THE TELETYPE:
The Ducks officially announced via Twitter, and the OC Register is reporting that the Ducks have signed defenseman Andy Sutton to a two-year deal. The 35 year old will make 2M this season and 2.25M next season.
The undrafted Michigan Tech alum started his career with San Jose before moving on to Minnesota, Atlanta and the Islanders, where he was traded to Ottawa at last year's deadline. He played 72 games combined with the two teams, but it was only the second time in his career that he eclipsed the 70GP mark in a season. A towering shutdown presence at 6'6" 245 lbs, Sutton was 21st in the league in hits and 2nd in the league in blocked shots last year.
***Ducks Trade Wisniewski To Islanders***
THE TELETYPE:
Anaheim announced today that they have traded defenseman James Wisniewski, who they also re-signed today, to the New York Islanders for a third round pick in 2011. The Islanders have two (theirs and Colorado's), and have until June 1st to decide which they will transfer to Anaheim. The Ducks did not formally announce Wisniewski's signing, waiting instead to announce the trade.
The Ducks acquired Wisniewski at the 2009 trade deadline in exchange for the expiring and pending UFA contract of Samuel Pahlsson. The injury-prone defenseman was a fixture of the Hawks third pairing and played some power play time with the club. With the Ducks, Wisniewski was given an increased role, but the sides could not see eye to eye on a contract renewal last season (recapped in this previous post). Despite playing a healthy season at roughly the same performance he offered the Blackhawks, the sides remained far apart again this summer and were headed for arbitration until today's sign and trade.
***Confirmed, Ducks Sign Wisniewski***
Wisniewski in Anaheim hits pay dirt with a settlement of 3.25M on a 1 year deal.
THE TELETYPE:
Sportsnet analyst Nick Kypreos has reported via Twitter that the Ducks have signed defenseman James Wisniewski to a one year deal at 3.25M. UPDATE: OCR's Eric Stephens has confirmed.
If true, his would be the second time in as many years that the Ducks and Wisniewski signed a one year deal while scheduled for arbitration. Last year, the injury-prone defenseman admitted the sides were apart on term and the 09-10 campaign would be used to evaluate his performance in a full season of healthy hockey. Wisniewski suffered only one minor injury during the year, though he did miss additional games as a result of two suspensions, and yet, Ducks general manager Bob Murray has admitted in recent months that the sides remained far apart on a new contract.
The Duck's likely position in this summer's negotiation was, perhaps, best summed up by OCR beat writer Eric Stephens, who noted the following when the Ducks qualified Wisniewski:
It is believed that Wisniewski is seeking a salary closer to what a No. 2 defenseman makes while it’s likely that the Ducks don’t view him as that and had to play him so much more out of necessity than desire.
If Kypreos' report is true, this contract will take James Wisniewski to the age of 27 and thus make him an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
