As was the case in his final preseason game, Jonas Hiller saw 43 shots in the season opener tonight against Detroit, but he was beaten early this time and not late on the way to a 4-0 loss to the Red Wings. Hiller was screened well on the first two goals, a back and forth tic-tac-toe between Franzen and Filppula and a hard wrist shot from Mike Modano. In the second period, the netminder would give up a score on a soft tip and then a crashing goal by Dan Cleary that went to the War Room in Toronto for confirmation.
In a dark spot for the Anaheim defense, Andy Sutton left the game in the second period and did not return. In a bright spot for the Anaheim defense, Cam Fowler played an impressive 21:20 against Red Wings forwards, including an incredibly poised 2:26 clearing the puck on the penalty kill, and was not on the ice for any of Detroit's four goals.
