After being crushed by the Red Wings to open the season, and then giving away two points to Detroit on a lapse so bad it actually got Jason Blake scratched, the Ducks have arrived at their third meeting with the winged wheel. You can talk about measuring yourself against the Western Conference's best, but how much does a dominant performance do to erase the 4-2 November 21st loss to the Western Conference's worst? These Ducks could easily beat the Red Wings today and lose to the Oilers again on Tuesday.
It'd be nice to avenge the losses, though, or to talk about how a win against a strong team is a meaningful gauge of where the team is. But those storylines aren't really all that valid. Ultimately, two points is two points right now, and this team has to gut out every win it can. There's a murderous east coast road trip on the horizon, and they can't afford to put themselves in a position where they have to win most or all of those games just to keep pace in the division going into the Christmas break.
