Quick Analysis of Ducks Growing Problem

ROBBY:

There's been a lot of discussion around these parts lately about the tendency of certain players (*cough* Francois Beauchemin and Cam Fowler *cough*) to give up goals while they're on the ice. Rather than continuing to rely on anecdotes, I decided to go straight to the numbers and get a better look at what's going on.

While the Fowler and Beauch suspicions were confirmed, I for one did not see the Saku Koivu thing coming. The numbers for Gordon and DSP are also concerning. I'm glad that our top line guys seem to be doing well, and a big part of that +5 from Getz and Perry has to do with their PP success. However, given that guys like Lubo and Fowler are also PP stalwarts, it's a bit disconcerting that they have the worst numbers among D-men.

What does all this mean? It's hard to say. On the one hand, you expect the guys that are on the ice the most (Fowler, Beauch, and Lubo) to give up the most goals. That said, you'd hope that they wouldn't be getting so badly outscored while they're on the ice. In terms of the forwards, it looks like the second line is being badly victimized while they're on the ice. We've always known that Teemu wasn't the most defensively sound forward, but I'm officially concerned about Koivu's numbers here. He's supposed to be one of our better defensive forwards and it just doesn't look like he's getting the job done so far.
