Ducks/Devils GameThread: Old Jersey

New, comments

How does the team that currently sits best in the West match up statistically against an opponent sitting on the outside of a post-season bid looking in? The numbers breakdown for the Ducks contest against the Devils might not be what you expect.

Numbers for Nerds:

Despite both teams having positive goal differentials in first periods (ANA +5, NJ +19), and negative differentials in second periods (ANA -21, NJ -12) the key difference lies in third periods. In closing frames, Anaheim has a solid +17 goal differential (83GF, 66GA) compared to New Jersey's atrocious -25 differential (54GF, 79GA) in thirds.

To keep it simple, the third period could be the deciding factor tonight, especially if the Ducks are trailing going into the third period. Keep in mind Anaheim leads the league with 12 wins when trailing after the first two periods of play.
