Your Enemy: Matchsticks & Gasoline
Put the lines in the blender, grab your Getzlaf voodoo doll, and get Johnny Gaudreau’s sippy-cup ready because it’s time for the Ducks to extract revenge on the Flames in the Saddledome for the 8-3 beatdown earlier this month.
The Ducks will be looking to lock down defensively and continue their controlling play from their last game against the Sharks, except for, you know, getting two points this time. The last time the Ducks faced the Flames (stop closing your eyes you’re going to have to re-live this it builds character), the 2nd period turned into the Ducks house of flashing red lights, Flames goal celebrations, and eternal sadness.
Head coach Randy Carlyle apparently sees that there has been a recent issue with offense indicated by his decision to attend the Boudreau school of line blending by moving Ondrej Kase up with Ryan Getzlaf and Nick Ritchie and putting Corey Perry with Antoine Vermette and Rickard Rakell during practice yesterday. The twins spent a considerable portion of last season split apart (with Rakell and Perry forming particularly good chemistry), so the Ducks know that this strategy can be effective.
Along with the new look lines, a brand new face is expected to join the Ducks on the road trip. It was announced yesterday that Sami Vatenen (flu-like symptoms) would not join the team and instead would be replaced by San Diego Gulls stud Brandon Montour. Montour has been nothing short of brilliant from the blue-line for the Gulls since he joined the Ducks AHL affiliate late in the 2014-2015 season. He currently leads the AHL in shots (113) and is co-leading the Gulls with 21 points (7g, 14a). Many have argued that he’s been long overdue for a chance with the big boys. It looks as though he will finally get it tonight.
