Johnson, who has primarily been a backup throughout his career, has had a tough go of it this season, posting a .884 sv% in 10 games. The Ducks will be hoping he can return to the form he had in 2015-2016 for Buffalo, when he posted a .920 sv% in 45 games played.
With the Duck claiming him off of waivers, Johnson will be in Anaheim and not in San Diego. The move is in response to the news that Ryan Miller has a sprained MCL and will be out for 6 weeks. Rickard Rakell also has a sprained ankle. There is no timetable for his return.

Goaltender Ryan Miller suffered a sprained MCL Sunday vs. New Jersey. He will be re-evaluated in two weeks. It is estimated he will be out for approximately six weeks.

With Miller out, Johnson will back up John Gibson over the next 6 weeks.
On Rakell, the news of an ankle sprain is concerning. Even if he returns in a few weeks, ankle sprains are notorious for sometimes taking a long period of time to heal.
