The Ducks downed Tampa Bay 3-2 at the Ponda Center tonight.
Anaheim owned the first period of play, banking a shot advantage of 9 to 2 and a power play goal from Teemu Selanne. However, the Lightning went to the locker room smiling, because they knew su’thing the Ducks din’ know, which is that they . . . are not left handed. Tampa held a 26-18 shot advantage, took a 2-1 lead and controlled play from the start of the second until late in the third when Kyle Palmieri, making his NHL debut, grunted out, “There’s something I ought to tell you . . . I’m not left handed either.” A backhanded pass on the rush from Bobby Ryan found both Bonino and Palmieri streaking down the slot. The feed eluded Bonino, but found Palmieri, who promptly banked it in off a defenseman’s skate for the rookie’s first NHL goal.
In overtime, Selanne powered into the zone, skated behind the net and fed a backhand pass to Anaheim captain Ryan Getzlaf on the doorstep. Cam Fowler was masterful in almost 25 minutes of play, including 5:22 of power play time with a shot on goal. Palmieri and Bonino combined for 5 shots in about 8 minutes each and were jumbled around the lineup but showed plenty of jump on a line with Todd Marchant.
